The FDA's new, new drug-approval (DAP) has given women a lifeline to sell and promote the blockbuster sex drug Viagra.
The drug is one of two new drugs that women have been told to "buy" and "sell" over the internet.
Viagra, also known as sildenafil citrate, is the active ingredient in the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra. That means it can be purchased from doctors who actually need it.
But doctors aren't allowed to give it to women, even if they know they need it for their own sexual health.
"It's a lot of men who are having trouble with the medication and are being prescribed it for women who are not being prescribed it because the drug is not working," Dr. John Lechleiter of the Cleveland Clinic told ABCNews.com.
The FDA also ordered a warning letter to women that they might be "under the influence of Viagra or other medication that may be causing significant sexual side effects, or which could potentially interact with sildenafil," according to ABCNews.com.
Doctors say a doctor can write a note to a patient that they've taken the drug, which could include a letter that a patient is taking to the doctor to tell them about the risks.
And a doctor can write a letter to a woman that she has taken Viagra, which can affect the way other drugs work.
So doctors say women are "under the influence of Viagra and these drugs are not helping a lot of the things they are trying to treat," according to the ABCNews.com letter.
While it may not be a good idea to sell Viagra to women who are not taking it because they have a medical condition that could be causing the problem, the FDA is still investigating. That could be a big area of concern for women who have been diagnosed with erectile dysfunction, or ED, and their doctors are still monitoring their patients.
For now, doctors are still prescribing the drug because it works best for women who have a uterus.
A recent found that men over the age of 40 who were prescribed Viagra were four times more likely than men to have had a condition that could be causing their ED, according to the latest study.
It was also found that men who take nitrates for chest pain or have had a heart attack in the past were six times more likely to have ED than men who have not.
While Viagra is a powerful drug for women's sexual health, doctors say the risks are not worth the risk. They say that is where the DAP came from.
"I believe that Viagra, like all other medications, has a potential benefit to the patient," Dr. Maryam Bhatt, an associate professor of reproductive endocrinology at the University of out of Cleveland, said.
Bhatt, who studies the use of the drug in the male, told ABCNews.com that the drug is safe for most women and that women who are on other medications, such as alpha-blockers, should not take it.
But she added that men who take it for other reasons, like Viagra, should not take it.
"If you're not taking a nitrate medication that is associated with a heart attack, a stroke, or a heart condition, you shouldn't take this drug," Bhatt said.
That's where the DAP came from.
Dr. David Rosen, director of clinical research for the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, told ABCNews.com that the drug has the potential to cause side effects and even the FDA said women who take it are more likely to experience erectile dysfunction.
"In the past, there wasn't much of a medical review of the drug, and we're now talking about it now and it can interact with some medications," Rosen said.
If the drug is not working for you, Dr. Rosen said that doctors may be more able to give you an idea of the risks and that it may be possible to treat ED in women.
The FDA's approval of the drug is also likely to mean that it will help women who are on an active medication called sildenafil.
The FDA said it has approved sildenafil to treat erectile dysfunction.
It also has the potential to increase the risk of a heart attack in some women.
